Prof John Hearle MBE Hon FTI CText FTI

It is with great sadness that The Textile Institute announces the passing of Prof John Hearle MBE Hon FTI CText FTI on 24 May 2016.

Professor Hearle served for many years at the faculty of the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), where he held the positions of Professor of Textile Technology, Head of the Department of Textiles, and Dean of the Faculty of Technology. Following retirement from UMIST in 1985, he spent periods as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware. He was a leading authority on the mechanics of fibre assemblies, ropes and terminations. He served as Chairman of Tension Technology International from 1986 to 1995 and was Chairman Emeritus and Senior Consultant. He advised on the performance of fibres, ropes and terminations.

Prof Hearle served as Chairman of Council of The Textile Institute (1993-1995) Vice President, Vice Chairman for two terms and sat on Council for many years. His membership record alone illustrates his commitment to the Institute and industry and he sat on up to 40 committees in his time including all standing committees, working groups, national and international groups and worked with educational groups from schools to university level.

Prof Hearle was made an Honorary Life Member in 1998, Honorary Fellow of The Textile Institute in 1984, received the Warner Memorial Medal in 1967 and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of The Textile Institute.

I am sure that we all join together to mourn the loss of such a figurehead of the Institute and an inspiration to the industry. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Ann, family, friends and colleagues around the world.
