In addition, Fellows and Associates are entitled to call themselves Chartered Members of The Textile Institute and to use the designation CText.

What is a professional qualification?

TI Professional Qualifications

• recognise and endorse not just academic knowledge but also professional experience and the competence to use that expertise in practical situations in the workplace;

• demonstrate the holder’s commitment to continuing professional development and to the maintenance of the highest professional standards (see Professional Code of Conduct);

• are recognised and valued around the world, indicating to employers, business contacts and colleagues that holders are members of a worldwide Association of textile professionals with access to first class business information services, publications and conferences.

Procedures for the award of TI Qualifications

All applicants must

1. be or become members of The Textile Institute;
2. complete the appropriate application form and include the names of referees;
3. return the form to TI Head Office with the appropriate fee

All applications are considered by the Diplomas Committee, which is a formally constituted and representative committee of Chartered members of the Institute. The Committee meets three times a year to examine applications and associated referees’ reports. Some applicants may be asked to attend an informal interview at a convenient location in order to allow them to demonstrate the extent of their knowledge and experience. When the Committee is satisfied that applicants have met the required criteria, its recommendations are put forward to Council, the ultimate governing body of The Textile Institute, for ratification.

Successful applicants

• must register their qualifications and may then use the designatory letters.

• receive an appropriate certificate.

• must remain members of the TI in order to continue to use their qualifications.

Accreditation

• TI accreditation of a degree or diploma course means that the course has been deemed to satisfy the academic requirements for ATI or LTI. Students who graduate from these courses during the period that the accreditation is valid may therefore apply for their professional qualifications as soon as they have completed the necessary period of work experience.

• All submissions for accreditation are considered by appropriate experts, who assess the course to ensure that it covers the subject area in sufficient detail to provide the appropriate level of specialised and general knowledge required for a TI qualification. Their reports are considered by the Diplomas Committee, which in turn makes recommendations to Council.

• Accreditation is generally granted for an initial period of five years, after which re-accreditation must be sought and the course content reviewed.

• Many courses have been accredited for ATI and LTI at educational institutions around the world.

In conclusion

• Holders of TI professional qualifications are visibly demonstrating their professional ability and competence to practise in their chosen field.
